What we store
- Your dock: a salted hash of its key (never the key itself), its time zone, and the boats, people and trips you enter, including names, ages and phone numbers you choose to add.
- For each trip, a copy of the boat and people at the time you saved it, so a past plan does not change when you edit a boat later.
- For rate limits: a salted hash of your IP address and a counter, deleted within 3 days.
Who can see it
- Anyone holding your dock link sees and can change everything in the dock.
- Anyone holding a trip's shore link sees that trip's plan (boat, people aboard with the details you entered, times, route, notes) until 7 days after the trip ends. A new shore link stops the old one. The standing shore link (Plus) shows open trips and trips back in the last 24 hours.
- Nobody else: there is no public listing and the pages are not indexed by search engines.
Cookies
__Host-bd_dock holds your dock key so this browser stays in your dock (400 days). __Host-bd_csrf protects forms. No tracking or advertising cookies, no analytics services. The only outside service any page loads is the banner on the public pages, described under Advertising; it also counts one page view per page as a daily total.
Advertising
The public pages of BoatDock (home, how it works, pricing and about) show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind this site. For now the ads are for WeldonPC's own services. Your dock, its boats, people and trips, printable float plans, shore links and the shore board, this page and the terms show no ad.
To show an ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your IP address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests. It never receives anything from your dock.
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
- How your IP address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your IP address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC's own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (IP address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser's site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
How long
- A dock nobody opens for 400 days is deleted with everything in it (unless Plus is running).
- Deleting a dock, a trip, a boat or a person removes it at once.
- Nightly database backups are kept for 14 days; copies made on the server when the site is updated are deleted from it within 30 days; an offsite copy of each update is kept with the site's records.
- Web server access logs (which include shore-link addresses) are kept by the host for its usual rotation.
Email and sharing
BoatDock sends no email or texts and shares nothing with anyone. When payments open, PayPal will handle payment details; we will receive only the subscription status.
